Every true southerner has their own Southern Style Green Bean recipe. They love to take them to potlucks, share them with others, and talk about how their recipe is different from everyone else’s.
Green beans are another comfort food that’s really hard to mess up. This easy recipe is so good it will have your family asking for more, and they are a great side to make with almost any main dish.
I used fresh green beans in this recipe. I usually get them from the farmer’s market or at the grocery store. However, if you are unable to find them you can use frozen beans.
Break the ends off and break each bean in half. Then you need to wash them thoroughly.
You also need to chop up a small onion, because this gives the beans a ton of flavor.
When you’re finally ready to cook the beans, throw all the ingredients into a large pot and turn on high until it begins to boil. Next, turn it down to a simmer to cook the rest of the time. You will not need to add salt to this recipe, because the chicken stock has enough to season the beans. If you add more it will be too salty.

- 1 pound fresh green beans, ends broken off and beans broke in half
- 1/2 cup chopped onion
- 1/2 teaspoon minced garlic, (I buy it already minced in a small jar)
- 1/2 cup small ham pieces, uncooked
- 2 cups chicken broth
- 1 tablespoon butter
- pepper to taste
Break and wash the green beans.

Add green beans to a large pot, then add chicken broth, minced garlic, onion, butter, pepper and ham pieces. Turn on high heat until it begins to boil, then turn down on low heat to simmer for 1 hour.
Busy Life Tip: Frozen green beans will work with this recipe if you cannot find fresh ones or don’t have time to break them. The cooking time should be increased by about 5-10 minutes.
You can use one or two pieces of bacon if you can’t find ham pieces. Be sure to cut up the bacon into small bite size pieces.
I wouldn’t add any salt to this dish. The chicken stock has enough salt to season the beans. If you add more it will be too salty.
